Black Swan Records was the first black owned record company. The label was founded in 1921, and was located in Harlem, New York. Two years later, in 1923 the company filed for bankruptcy. The label’s specialized genres were jazz and blues. It was also the first recording company to record African American classical musicians. Although Black Swan Records had a short span of existence, the label released 180 records; and helped pave the way for African Americans to “get their foot in the door of the mainstream music industry”
African Americans have used music as a creative outlet for many years to express their innermost thoughts, their struggles, and profess their faith. I am glad that I have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of those who have come before, and use music to get my message out to the world.
