Jesse B Blayton was the first African American to own and produce a radio station in the US. He founded WERD AM on October 3, 1949. The station was geared toward an African American demographic. In its music rotation, the station played R&B music, a genre that was at the time, exclusive to WERD. Blayton’s radio station also made it a point to report on the Civil Rights Movement and other related news pertaining to the black community.
In undergrad, I had the opportunity to create and produce two radio shows for my college’s radio station WMTB 89.9 and fell in love with the process. I hope to one day get back onto radio and use it as a creative outlet to minister to the masses!
